Glenwood Canyon-Inspired Alternatives to Hiking Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake is getting a major makeover. Visitors can still hike the iconic trail, however access is dramatically limited this summer. But don’t fret! There’s plenty to do in Glenwood Springs while the trail gets its well-deserved facelift.

Activities With Glenwood Canyon Cache

Part of the appeal of Hanging Lake is its stunning setting in Glenwood Canyon. Fortunately, hiking Hanging Lake isn’t the only opportunity to experience the beauty of this gorgeous natural landscape. While the legendary trail is undergoing an overhaul, historic Hotel Colorado in Glenwood has a few fantastic alternatives for you to try.

  1. Grizzly Creek Trail

For those who want to experience the beauty of hiking within the bounds of Glenwood Canyon, Grizzly Creek Trail is an ideal replacement for Hanging Lake. Located at Exit 121, the trailhead features ample parking, restrooms, and hydration stations for topping off your water bottle. The lower portion of the trail is lined with lush summertime foliage and picnic tables for an al fresco lunch. As you ascend, the trail narrows and traverses over rockier terrain. Like Hanging Lake, this out-and-back hike is short and satisfying.

  1. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

Perhaps the most unexpected way to experience Glenwood Canyon is from a great height. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is the highest-elevation theme park in the U.S. From the summit of Iron Mountain many of the Park’s thrill rides provide straight-down views of the canyon some 1,400 feet below. To get a glimpse, climb aboard the Giant Canyon Swing, Cliffhanger Roller Coaster, and Canyon Flyer. Fun fact, both Hanging Lake and Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park are designated as National Natural Landmarks!

  1. Whitewater Rafting in Glenwood Canyon

Another option for spending time in Glenwood Canyon is to book a Glenwood Springs whitewater rafting trip on the Colorado River. Churning rapids, choppy ripples, and natural in-river hot springs are all included on a typical half-day rafting trip. The same geological forces that carved out Hanging Lake also created this rafting paradise.

  1. Hanging Lake & Shoshone Chutes at Glenwood Hot Springs Pool

Inspired by the iconic Hanging Lake Falls and the thrilling whitewater rafting on the Colorado River, guests can conveniently cross the street from Hotel Colorado to the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool for a fun Glenwood Canyon adventure. The Sopris Splash Zone is a canyon-themed waterpark with various attractions. “Hanging Lake” is perfect for young children. It features shallow play areas and gentle waterfalls for interactive fun. For an exhilarating experience, the Shoshone Chutes tube ride mimics the fast-moving excitement of rafting the Colorado River.

Why Hanging Lake is Getting a Makeover

Hanging Lake Trail is currently undergoing a much-needed refurbishment. Crews began renovating the popular trail in May, repairing damage from the Grizzly Creek Fire in 2020 and subsequent mudslides. The 1.2-mile trail will see comprehensive improvements, from the trailhead to the famous falls.

The work is expected to be completed by Fall 2024, with the trail closed on weekdays and occasionally on weekends for bridge installations. Although it’s still possible to hike Hanging Lake this summer, fewer permits will be issued.
